September's Sustainability Challenge

September Sustainability Challenge: Join Second Hand September!

This month, our Sustainability Group is supporting Second Hand September—a national campaign led by Oxfam that encourages people to say no to new clothes for 30 days and embrace the power of pre-loved fashion.

Why?

Because fast fashion has a huge environmental impact. Every year, millions of garments end up in landfill, and the fashion industry contributes significantly to global carbon emissions. By choosing second hand, we can reduce waste, save resources, and support a more sustainable future.

How You Can Get Involved:

  • Shop second hand at charity shops, vintage stores, or online resale platforms
  • Share your favourite second-hand finds below or send a photo to engagement@sng.org.uk
  • And share tips, stories, and ideas throughout the month. Whether it’s a wardrobe refresh, a DIY upcycle, or a brilliant bargain, we’d love to hear from you!

Together, we can make small changes that lead to a big impact—for our communities, our planet, and future generations.

Everyone that gets involved will be entered into a prize draw for a £20 voucher, and we will also pick our favourite photos/stories that will each receive a £25 voucher.

I hardly buy any new clothes - not just for 30 days, but the whole year round! We have several charity shops in town which I check out first before I buy anything new. In our local library they run a winter coat exchange, from which I obtained a couple of high quality coats and any outerwear which I do not wear anymore gets gratefully accepted and finds a new home. Also, it is worthwhile to "shop your own wardrobe", i.e. digging out stuff which has been almost forgotten, not been worn for a while and therefore feels like a "refresh"!
We are lucky to have a great second hand shop in town, it calls itself "Car Boot Trader". They take almost anything under the sun, sell it in their shop, on car boot sales and on e-bay. I have taken lots of items in there and bought some really great stuff in there - so I can declutter and get nice items which I will have good use for.
I was growing up in Eastern Germany behind the "Iron Curtain" before coming to the UK in 1993 and due to the lack of everything we have had to improvise and recycle a lot. The extent of today's materialism - driven mainly by big greedy corporates - is completely alien to me. Waste not, want not!

My family and I have started a new tradition of exchanging pre-loved items for birthdays and Christmas. We exchange well loved and favourite books as well rather than buying new. We have friends and family days to explore charity shops and regularly have clothing exchanges. What doesn’t get selected goes back to the charity shop. It’s good fun, supports charities and better for the environment!

Don't throw away your old towels, bedding etc... donate to local animal shelters. They use them for wildlife rescues and comfy bedding in their sanctuary.

If you've brought trousers or a dress and its too long, don't get rid of it. Use simple iron glue sheets, that you can use at the hem of your garment and iron over it to seal it into place and the right size.
