We know that people living in social rented homes can sometimes face unfair stigma because of where they live. Unfortunately, this can have a negative impact on mental health, employment opportunities, and overall quality of life.
At SNG, we're committed to helping tackle these issues and reducing the impact stigma can have on our customers. Since Autumn 2025, we've been working with a fantastic group of residents as part of the national Stop Social Housing Stigma campaign's Journey Planner programme. Their insights and experiences are helping to shape how we address stigma and ensure that people living in SNG homes have a voice in the solutions.
What we've achieved so far
The group's contributions have already led to some positive changes, including:
Recommending that SNG colleagues attend Strengths-Based Thinking training sessions delivered by the Foyer Federation.
Creating a Housing Jargon Buster to help explain housing-related terms in clear, accessible language. You can view it here: Housing Jargon Buster | SNG.
Suggesting that the Engagement Team share promotional materials with the Employment and Training Team. The group is also supporting a Youth Roundtable taking place in November for young people from across the G15, where social housing stigma will be one of the discussion topics.
Establishing a Resident Reading Group, which reviews customer communications to ensure the language, tone and messaging are clear, respectful, and free from stigma.
We'd love to hear from you
Your views are important to us. Please take a few minutes to complete our short survey and tell us what you think about social housing stigma and how we can continue to make a difference.
